India’s lone male archer, Atanu Das, finished 5th in the Archery individual ranking round with 683 points on Saturday at Sambódromo to move into the elimination round of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Kim Woojin from South Korea topped the rankings with a new world record score of 700 points.

The 24-year-old archer started strongly and hit 58 points in the first end to move into the third position. But a poor second end, where he managed only 53 points, pushed him down in the rankings. However, Atanu bounced back by scoring 57 points in the next two end to break in the top-20. In the fifth and sixth rounds, he scored 55 and 57 points respectively to finish the half-way mark at the 15th position.

Atanu shot 55 and 57 points in the next seventh and eighth end respectively to remain in contention for the top-10 before producing a brilliant ninth, where he hit five 10s and a nine to move into the 10th spot. Although he managed to score 58 points in the tenth end, he slipped out of the top-10 to 11th. In the penultimate end, he hit three bullseyes to score 59 points and moved into the seventh position. In the final end, Atanu held his nerve and scored 58 points to finish fifth with 683 points.

Atanu will now face Jitbahadur Muktan of Nepal, who finished 60th with 607 points in the round of 64 match on Monday (August 8).

Former World No.1 Kim Woojin of South Korea finished at the top of the rankings with a world record score of 700. He managed to hit 26 bullseyes on his way to create the new world record. The previous record was held by Im Dong Hyun who scored 699 points with 72 arrows in the London 2012 Olympics. USA's Brady Ellison finished second with 690 points, while David Pasqualucci of Italy finished third with 685 points.
