After Indian archer Anita Kumari was tested positive for a banned substance called propanolol, the Archery Association of India (AAI) might drop her from the national squad ahead of World Cup Stage II in Shanghai. The sample was collected from her during the Khelo India Youth Games in January.

With the Indian archers preparing for the World Cup Stage II in Shanghai, which will be held from May 6 to 12, youngster Anit Kumari has received a major set-back. The compound archer was tested positive for using a banned substance propanolol beta blocker from her urine sample, which was collected during the Khelo India Youth Games earlier this year.

The archer qualified for the national team travelling for the World Cup after her good show in the selection trials held in Bhubaneswar between March 12 and 18 earlier this year. Now, after getting the update from National Anti Doping Agency (NADA), the association is mulling over dropping her from the World Cup-bound Indian squad.

“I don’t have the details now and I don’t know whether she has been provisionally suspended. But we cannot take any risk. There is no need to find a replacement as three other girls are there in the team,” AAI president B.V.P. Rao told Sportstar.

The president of the archery association also spoke about the reason behind appointing two caches Ved Kumar and Kailash. Olympian Lalram Sanga, who is also the convenor of the National selection committee, had suggested the name of Ved Kumar to the president.

“They are not active archers. We needed some people with good track records to bring in discipline in the team,” said Rao.

“Ved is around 45 years of age and Kailash is between 35 and 40. They have been good archers and have done both recurve and compound. We needed some common coaches who could look after all the archers in the side,” Sanga told Sportstar.
