Reports : AAI likely to have two separate elections after Supreme Court order
The Archery Association of India (AAI) has reportedly divided into two camps after the Supreme Court ordered fresh elections with the association likely to have two elections. The court had set aside the previous AAI elections, which was held in December last year, declaring it null and void.
As per TOI reports, the two AAI camps have interpreted the SC order as their own convenience and while AAI's acting president Sunil Sharma has called for the elections on May 26 at the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) headquarters, secretary general Maha Singh has called the member associations on May 10 in Chandigarh in order to discuss the further election procedures.
According to the order, the election would be needed to be conducted within four weeks from May 1 and the division has only created more confusion. It has also been reported that as per Sharma’s election notification, the article 24 of the AAI constitution would allow him to call for elections as he is the acting president and the senior vice-president of the AAI.
Maha Singh, however, objected to it stating it "blatantly illegal". He has also written to the other state associations, clarifying that as per the court order, the elected body in office would be continuing to function as the 'committee of administrators'.
"It means the AAI's executive committee will become the committee of administrators and will conduct the elections. According to the constitution, it's the secretary of the association who issues the notice for elections on the request of the president. The election notice signed by Sunil Sharma is illegal," he said, reported TOI.
