Asian Para Games 2018 | India at 8th spot with 28 medals as Ekta, Narayan, Manish clinch gold

India bagged three more gold medals on the third day of the Asian Games as Ekta Bhyan and Narayan Thakur clinched the yellow metal in women’s F32/51 club throw event and men’s T35 100m dash respectively. In the men’s SH1 10m air pistol event shooter Manish Narwal earned the top spot.

The majority of medals on Tuesday came from para-athletics with Bhyan producing her best throw winning the F32/51 (features athletes with significant impairment in hand function) event ahead of UAE’s Alkaabi Thekra, who threw 15.75 m. In her fourth attempt, Bhyan secured 16.02 m, that propelled her to the top spot.

Another gold medal for India was claimed by Thakur, who won the 100 m final race in 14.02 seconds in the T35 class that consists of athletes with coordination impairments (hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis). 

From para-athletics, India also secured three silver medals through Surender Aneesh Kumar (men’s F43/44,F62/64 discus), Ram Pal (men’s T45/46/47 high jump), Virender (men’s F56/57 shot put) and five bronze medals from Monu Ghangas, Jayanti Behera, Anandan Gunasekaran, Sundar Singh Gurjar and Pradeep. 

Ghangas finished third in the men’s shot put F11, while Gunasekaran in men’s 200m T44/62/64 class. Behera bagged the bronze in the women’s T45/46/47 200m and Gurjar bagged the bronze in men’s F46 discus throw.

India maintained the eighth spot with 28 medals (6 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze) out of which 15 are from para-athletics. China continued to top the table with 73 gold, 32 silver and 29 bronze, followed by South Korea in the second with 23 gold, 20 silver and 11 bronze.
