Despite having no cash prize in the championships, the 16th edition of the Kerala State Inter-District Club Athletics Championship will be seeing over a record 1600 athletes participating in the tournament. It will be held at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium from Wednesday.

After having organized it successfully until 2016, the Kerala State Athletics Association (KSAA) couldnā€™t organize it in 2017 for lack of hosts. However, it was brought back last year at the same venue but without the money.

However, despite having no prize money and more importantly no senior categories, the tournament would be seeing at least 1600 athletes competing for it.

"We have been seeing this trend in entries every year. Last edition included men and women. Despite dropping the senior categories this time the number of entries is breaking record. The inter-district club is one of biggest event in athletics calendar. We organsie the three-day programme with a mere budget of Rs 5 lakh," said PI Babu, secretary, KSSA, reported TOI.

Lack of money hasnā€™t been an issue for the boys and girls of four junior categories ā€“ Under-14, U-16, U-18, and U-20. While the likes of Aparna Roy of Malabar Sports Academy and Pulloorampara in Kozhikode are expected to go the distance in the 100m and 400m hurdles events of the girls hurdles, Akhill Kumar CD of Mundur HSS in Palakkad would be expected to dominate the boys triple jump.

CR Abdul Razzack of Mathur would be highly expected to mark new time in boys 400m event for the meet would be a season opener and records could be premium.
