PT Usha appointed in Athletes Commission of Asian Athletics Association
India track legend PT Usha has been appointed among one of the six members of the Athletes Commission of Asian Athletics Association for her brilliant achievements at the continental stage. The AAA Athletes Commission would be headed by 1992 Olympics gold medallist Andrey Abduvaliyev.
Popularly known as the âPayyoli Expressâ, Usha was one of the stars on the Asian stage in the 1980s. Her claim to fame was her feat in the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, where she had won four gold medals and a bronze. Prior to that, she had won five gold and a bronze medal in the Asian Championships in Jakarta as well.
Though she had missed an Olympic medal in the 1984 Games in Los Angles by the skin of the teeth, finishing fourth in the womenâs 400m hurdles and losing the bronze by one-hundredth of a second, her legend couldnât be questioned. It was proved when the 55-year-old was handed the honorary post.
âI have accepted the appointment as a member of the AAA Athletes Commission. It is a great honour for me and for the country,â Usha told PTI on phone.
Headed by Uzbekistanâs star hammer thrower Andrey Abduvaliyev, the other members of the commission are Wang Yu of China, 2012 London Olympics gold medallist triple jumper Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan, Lee Hup Wei of Malaysia, and Saad Shaddad of Saudi Arabia.
