According to The Indian Express, Hima Das may not take part in the IAAF World Relays starting this Saturday in Yokohama after she was diagnosed with spondylitis of the lumbar vertebrae. According to reports, this will require Das to go through a period of rest, rehabilitation along with medication.

After being diagnosed with spondylitis of lumbar vertebrae, the lower back, the young Indian athlete’s participation at the World Relays is in doubt. The World Relays will begin from tomorrow in Yokohama but it is learnt that the 20-year-old Indian athlete has to go through a period of rest, rehabilitation and medication for spondylitis. The World U-20 400m champion had started training from May 5 with the rest of the team and is currently in Yokohama for the event.

“Hima Das has started training with the relay squad earlier this week. She will need to do some exercises and will also need some rest and rehabilitation as part of her recovery. Her progress is being monitored carefully,” deputy chief national coach Radhakrishnan Nair was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

On the other hand, Nair was non-committal when there was a query regarding Das’ participation in the crucial World Relays which is important for the Olympic qualification and World Athletics Championships as well.

Das was earlier ruled out of the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships in the women’s 4X400m relay and the mixed team relay events due to the back spasm. She had also pulled out off the 400m heats at the continental event as well.
