India’s women’s relay team finished a terrible 18th in the 21-team field while the men’s team ended 17th in the 17-team field, thereby failing to qualify for Doha World Championships, where the top 10 qualifies. Hima Das participated in the women’s team amidst all injury fears but to no avail.

The women’s team finished fifth in Heat 3 despite their season-best effort of 3:31.93, which was better than their silver medal feat at the Asian Athletics Championship in Doha. The men’s team on the other hand last (sixth) in Heat 2 with a time of 3:06.05 in Yokohama, Japan on Saturday.

Ahead of the 4*400 m really, Das was a huge concern owing to her fitness after she had to pull out of the Asian Championships in Doha last month. But, to fans’ delight, the 400m world junior champion was seen competing alongside M. R. Poovamma, V. K. Vismaya, and Saritaben Gayakwad, the same quartet that had won the Asian Games gold medal last year. But, India fell flat.

The men’s relay side saw Kunhu Muhammed, Jithu Baby, Jeevan K. Suresh and Muhammed Anas Yahiya competing in the 4*400m world relays but they found themselves massively under-strength against the world’s best and finished the slowest in the 17-team field.

The first two finishers from the heats followed by the next two fastest teams would be qualifying for the final.
