India’s star steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable has been of the opinion that the Indian coaches understand the physical attributes of Indian athletes better than the foreign coaches. Sable, who is the national record holder in 300m steeplechase, would be running in the World 10K on Sunday.

After missing out on the Asian Games last year with an injury, when Sable was training under Nicolai Sensarev, the Indian athlete chose to return to his previous coach Amrish Kumar in September and has returned back to the good speed. And he has discerned that the Indian coaches understand the strengths and weaknesses of Indian athletes better.

“An Indian coach can understand the Indian body. He knows better what are the needs and shortcomings of Indian athletes. However, other coaches also are good,” said Sable reported PTI.

Kumar, who is also an army officer, seconded Sable stating that the coaches from outside India don’t understand the physical attributes of players. “That’s what happened. Sable could not participate in the Asian Games because of the injury he suffered while training under former foreign national coach Nicolai Sensarev in Bengaluru,” he said.

“He returned to us in October and we worked on his injury,” Kumar said. “For first three months we did not let him run fast and slowly increased the pace because he had little strength and moderate endurance. But, he had good speed,” Kumar added.

Sable created a new national record of 8:28.94 under an Indian coach that helped him qualify for the Asian and World Championships. Currently training in Bengaluru, Sable is eyeing the Tokyo Olympics and would soon be shifting to Ooty. When asked about his chances of qualifying for the Olympics, Kumar sounded more than confident.

“Sable may not appear to be physically that strong, but he is mentally very strong. He is definitely going to qualify for Olympics in Asian Games heat,” Kumar said.
