CWG Gold medalist Kidambi Srikanth to be crowned world number one in BWF rankings this week

After mixed team event Gold, Kidambi Srikanth is all set to jump to the number one sport in the BWF rankings ahead of Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen later this week. India's badminton contingent combined to deliver a landmark mixed team gold medal on day five in Gold Coast, where they won 3-1.

The entire Indian contingent that are currently participating in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast have been smashing records since day one. The weightlifters, shooters and the other athletes have already won a host of medals since the competition began on April 4. When it came to the sport of Badminton, everyone turned to the special trio of - Ashwini Ponappa, Kidambi Srikanth, and Saina Nehwal - to make the country proud. Rest assured, they did not fail to impress.

As a direct result of his exploits at in Gold Coast, ace shuttler Kidambi Srikanth will jump to the top of the BWF rankings later this week ahead of Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen. Axelsen has been out of action since he retired from the second round of the Indonesia Masters in January with an ankle injury. The Danish national subsequently pulled out of the India Open Superseries, the All England Open and the European Championships after a surgery in order to undergo rehabilitation for the injury.

Axelsen was currently on 77,130 points in the ranking charts while Srikanth is at 76,895 points. But the Dane will lose 1,660 points this week, which will take Srikanth to the top spot when the new Badminton World Federation rankings are released on April 12.

Last week, India's badminton team created history as they won a landmark mixed team gold medal on day five of the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast. They beat favorites Malaysia 3-1 on the back of strong shuttle play from Ashwini Ponnappa, Satwik Rankireddy, Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal.
