Ashwini Ponnappa has stated that the Asian Games is tougher than the Commonwealth Games with the likes of China, Japan, Korea and others participating. She further added that the team will try to replicate their Incheon games display and with a podium finish being the ultimate goal.

Ponnappa played a pivotal role in the Indian contingent’s successful campaign in Commonwealth Games earlier this year, where they returned with a gold in the team event. And the shuttler sounded confident of the team getting a podium finish in the Asiad like their Incheon Games campaign four years ago where they clinched a bronze.

However, Ponnappa was quick to state that the Asian Games would be tougher than what they experienced in the Gold Coast.

“At the international level there are no easy games as every team has quality players but yes, Asian Games are more competitive than the Commonwealth Games as top-badminton nations like China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand are a part of it," the 28-year-old shuttler, who plays doubles, told PTI.

The Olympian also added that facing top badminton nations would be a challenge for the team, but they would be eyeing for a podium finish like the Incheon games.

“It would be a great challenge to compete against these teams as it would test our skills, speed and endurance. We aim to put our best foot forward and look for a podium finish in the Asian Games. We finished on the podium in the last Asian Games in the women's team event. The ultimate goal would be to get gold for the nation, so most definitely yes, the team is looking for a podium finish at the Asian Games."

Ponappa also admitted that repeating the feat won't be an easy task and they need to be at their best to come out on top.

“It would not be easy but we have to train hard and give our 100 percent on the court if we are to win a medal. It is important to keep the focus intact and not crumble under pressure," said Ponnappa.

Ponnappa also declared that she would be taking part in the World Championships.

"The next big tournament would be the World Championships. It is going to be a busy schedule but my preparations have been going on and things have worked out well. I had a good training block after the Commonwealth Games before taking a tiny break and have some much needed time off before these major events to get back fresh and continue training," she signed off.
