Top Indian seeds Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu secured safe passage into the quarter final of the Malaysia Open with wins over Wang Tzu Wei and Ting Ying Lee respectively. However, in what turned out to be mixed day of result for India, Saina Nehwal was ousted by second seed Akane Yamaguchi.
In a match that lasted 36 minutes, the game got off to a bad start for Srikanth with Wang taking the first two points. However, the Indian took the initiative and raced away to an 11-3 lead at the interval thanks to eight straight points and appeared to be in complete control. But Wang, who had defeated Sai Praneeth yesterday, was in no mood to give up easily and with a streak of five straight points ensured that he stayed in the game, and after saving two game points, even drew level at 20-20. But, he failed to get over the final hurdle as Srikanth took the next two points to seal the first game 22-20. The second game proved to more of a formality as Srikanth raced away to an 11-2 lead at the break. The carnage continued after the interval as well, with Srikanth securing the second game by a score of 21-12.

However, India had suffered a setback earlier in the day as Saina bowed out of the tournament after a straight games defeat to Yamaguchi. The signs were there from the start as the Japanese star took the first two points only to see Saina draw level two points later. However, that was the last time that both players were level as Yamaguchi showed off her exceptional stamina to take the first game 21-15. The second game was almost identical to the first one as Saina drew level at 2-2 after being down by two points only to lose the game and the match 21-13.
