Badminton World Championships | Gold will be the target for me, says PV Sindhu

PV Sindhu is aiming a gold medal as she prepares for a tough outing at the upcoming Badminton World Championships to be played in Switzerland. The world number five has been training under Korean coach Kim Ji Hyun and will start her campaign against America's Beiwen Zhang.
It's not always been smooth sailing for India's PV Sindhu who has endured some tough times on the big stage ever since she got thrust into the limelight after she won a silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016. A Padma Shri awardee, Sindhu will hope to put her critics to rest as she gears up for the tough challenge that awaits her at the upcoming Badminton World Championships to be held in Basel, Switzerland.Â
The 2018 Gold Coast CWG silver medalist revealed that she is focused on bagging gold at the global showpiece which starts on August 19.
“There is nothing like an easy match at this level as there is little that separates the top 16 players. So, it is not like you have an easy opponent in one round and a tougher player in the next round. You have to be on your toes always and give your best consistently right through the championship. It has been really nice to train under Korean Kim Ji Hyun. It is good to pick up a few new things.Â
“The emphasis has been on a lot of variations and skills too for the challenges, and the quality of opposition will be different, compared to the previous edition. Gold will be the target, having won the bronze and silver earlier. But, again, it doesn’t mean there is any kind of pressure on me because of the expectations. Honestly, I will put the best foot forward and hope the results will fall in place,” Sindhu told Sportstar.Â
Sindhu, who was the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the Olympics, added that she is satisfied with the way she has been playing this season despite some unfortunate results in the knockout stages of BWF tournaments.Â
“I am honestly pleased with the way I have been playing. It is only a question of time before I put my hands on a big trophy.Â
“Yes, like in all major events, I have to take every round and not think too far ahead in the coming Worlds. It all depends on how well you play on the given day,” Sindhu added.Â
