PV Sindhu defeated Nozomi Okuhara and created history by winning India's maiden gold at BWF World Championships. Sindhu had a great tournament as she got the better off higher-ranked shuttlers like Tai Tzu Ying and Chen Yu Fei. Indian sports fraternity lauded PV Sindhu and reacted on the same.

In 2017, PV Sindhu and Okuhara had played out one of the most nail-biting finals and after pushing each other to the limits, Nozomi Okuhara had come out triumphant against the Indian. In what can be called a sweet reciprocation of sorts, PV Sindhu took revenge with a kind of performance that could only be termed riotous. Dominating the match from the word go, Sindhu won the points for fun and never did seem out of sorts. By eventually closing it on with 21-7, 21-7, Sindhu ended her long search for a gold medal and became the first Indian shuttler to win a Gold at the BWF World Championships.
