Senior Badminton Nationals | Lakshya Sen and Shlok Ramachandran blaze past opponents to next round

Lakshya Sen and Shlok Ramachandran, who played important roles in Airport Authority of India’s Inter-Zonal title triumph, moved to the next round of the Senior Badminton Nationals. Harsheel Dani also battled it out against Siril Verma in a nail-biting thriller to qualify for the third round.

The first day of the Senior Badminton Nationals had the whole nine yards, as Assam hosted as many as 250 matches played across nine courts throughout the day. The crowd was fascinated as five players from the state won the first round of the tournament and progressed to the next. The preliminary rounds will continue till February 13 to decide who takes on whom in the pre-quarters. The Super Draw has been scheduled to take place on February 14.

Lakshya Sen and Shlok Ramachandran had helped the AAI in winning the Inter-Zonal title the other day and were quickly back to the scheme of things as they defeated their opponents skillfully and galloped to the next round of the qualifiers. Shlok Ramchandran emerged victorious in the mixed doubles as he, teamed up with Mithula UK, beat Akshit Mahajan and Anupama Upadhyaya 21-12, 21-19 in the second round.

The top seeds have all been belligerent in their approach against their opponents. Men’s singles top seed shuttler Arintap Dasgupta eased past Anay Shirpurkar 21-8, 21-5 while fifth seed Rahul Yadav Chittaboina closed the curtains for Karan Choudhary 21-17, 21-8 in about 32 minutes. Sixth seed Aryamann Tandon defeated Bidyasagar Salam 21-6, 21-6 without any hassle.

Megha Bora Morchana won effortlessly against Nagaland’s Ekumyala with the scoreline reading 21-9, 21-14 at the end of the match. Harsheel Dani, the Ghana International 2018 winner had arisen as the better of the two, in a nail-biting thriller against former world junior championships silver medallist Siril Verma to reach the third round.

In the mixed doubles, Manu Attri and Maneesha K were detrimental against Mohit Tiwari and Smirti Nagarkoti winning the match 21-5, 21-6. Jammu and Kashmir’s Raghav Dogra and Rupal Anand were also ruthless as they routed Sikkim’s Rewash Rai and Tashi Choden Gurung 21-12, 21-15.
