India’s singles shuttlers PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth have won their respective first round matches at the ongoing Indonesia Masters to qualify for Round 2. In the doubles category, the pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy also made it to the second round of the competition.

Nehwal had a terrible start to her first round women’s singles game as she went down to local shuttler Dinar Dyah Ayustine 7-21 in the first game. However, the Indian shuttler made a good comeback in the second one as she took the game 21-16 after being 9-12 down. The 28-year-old continued her dominance against the 50th ranked player to win the decider by 21-11 points and will now meet another Indonesian Fitriani Fitriani in the second round of the tournament.

In the other match of the same category, PV Sindhu also had a start like her compatriot as she lost the first game. However, here the first game was the most competitive one with China’s Li Xuerui winning it by a 24-22. But, World No. 3, Sindhu came out in the next game with clear domination against the Chinese and thrashed her opponent 21-8. The match lasted for 54 minutes as Sindhu finished off the well-contested decider with 21-17 to make it to the second round. Now, she will be meeting Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in her next outing in the Indonesia Masters.

Srikanth has also made it to the second round by beating Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng by 21-12, 21-8. Srikanth continued his domination against Feng from the very first game by having a huge lead of 11-4 at the break. Feng could collect only eight more points before Srikanth took it away. The second one was even easier for the Indian shuttler as the match ended inside 30 minutes with the world No. 8 Srikanth qualifying for the next round where he will meet Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto.

In another first round men’s singles encounter, B Sai Praneeth was defeated by China’s Chen Long in the first round match by 21-12, 21-16 points. Long took the first game quite comfortably as he maintained the dominance from the initial passage of the game by going into the mid-game break at 11-6. Although Praneeth did put up a good show in the next game, it was not enough to take the match into a decider and it ended in 41 minutes with the Chinese qualifying for the second round. Parupalli Kashyap suffered the same fate as Praneeth as he went down to Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in straight games. Ranked 42, Kashyap had no answer to the seventh-ranked shuttler in the world as the match only lasted for 39 minutes with the Indonesian taking it away comfortably with 21-12, 21-16.

Subhankar Dey, however, managed to take his match against Victor Axelsen to the decider as he made a good comeback to take the second game 21-19 after losing the first one 14-21. But, Axelsen was as flawless as always in the last game and qualified for the second round by winning the last game by 21-15.

In the doubles category, the Indian pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy won their first round match against Mads Pieler Kolding and Niclas Nohr from Denmark by 14-21, 21-19, 21-15. On the other hand, the mixed doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy lost 14-21, 14-21 to Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai
