LIVE Sudirman Cup | India vs Malaysia – Group 1D
India would be kick-starting their Sudirman Cup campaign against an Lee Chong Wei-less Malaysia on Tuesday and with China being their other opponent, this would be their best chance. The 15-man Indian squad is led by Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu with Saina Nehwal, Sameer Verma and others included.
India have never won the mixed team championship before their last two attempts in the 2011 and 2017 editions being halted at quarterfinals. The journey this time, despite being buoyed by the likes of Sindhu and Nehwal, isn’t expected to be an easy one either as they have 10-time Sudirman Cup winners China in the group.
Luckily, two teams would advance into the knockout stages and in the absence of Lee Chong Wei, Malaysia’s chances look extremely slim. However, the erratic form of Sindhu and Srikanth leave very little scope of optimism amongst fans for India.
Though the face-offs would be revealed just ahead of the game, the potential clashes could be Srikanth facing Lee Zii Jia, and Sameer Verma taking Cheam June Wei in the men’s singles category. In the women’s singles event, PV Sindhu is expected to take on Goh Jin Wei while Nehwal takes on Soniia Cheah Su Ya.
The emerging men’s pair of Swastiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty would most likely be taking on Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, while the women’s doubles of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy could be pitted against Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean. While the mixed doubles pair is yet to finalized, they would most likely take on Goh Soon Huat and Lee Meng Yean.
