In what is going to be a historic achievement for Indian boxing, the country will host the menâs World Championship in 2021, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, they will also be conducting the womenâs World Championship for the second time next year.
The AIBA made the announcement at the end of its two-day executive committee meeting in Moscow.
âWe are delighted to have the AIBA Menâs World Championships 2019 confirmed for Sochi and equally excited to announce New Delhi as host city in 2021 as the Boxing Federation of India continues to show its commitment to developing the sport,â AIBA President Dr Ching Kuo Wu said in a statement, reported PTI.
âFollowing the presentation of the Turkish Boxing Federation, I know that Trabzon will also meet the demands of hosting the worldâs biggest womenâs boxing tournament in 2019,â he added.Â
India has never conducted the menâs World Championship but had hosted the 2006 womenâs event. Meanwhile, after going through the presentations, the AIBA Executive Committee awarded the 2019 womenâs World Championship to Turkey. The AIBA 2018 Congress was awarded to the Russian capital city of Moscow.
âThe strength of all of the bids we have seen today is the clearest indication yet of AIBAâs successful efforts to amplify the prestige of its World Championship even further, with the strongest global broadcasting and sponsorship partnerships secured to date already finalised for next monthâs Menâs World Championships in Hamburg,â Dr Wu stated.
