Australian boxer Taylah Robertson has already been guaranteed to win at least a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games even before the Games even begin. Robertson entered in the women's 51kg category and got a bye to the semi-final directly, where she has been ensured a bronze even if she loses.

The South Australian city of Gold Coast is witnessing a glittering opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games now with different events set to get underway from Thursday. However, even before that, the hosts have been assured of a medal in the women 51kg category, where boxer Taylah Robertson has gotten a bye to the semi-final. As per the rule in the Games, both losing semi-finalists will win a bronze medal, but the teenager doesn’t want to sit quietly and want to strike gold for the country.

"It's nice to have a medal but I want gold. With all the training I've done, I want to earn it. I'm not worried about who I meet in the semi-final, I'm ready," Robertson was quoted as saying by BBC.

However, this isn’t the only time that a boxer has secured a medal without fighting as at the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, Welshman Aneurin Evans was given a bye straight into the final and thus guaranteed himself a medal. Although in the final, he was beaten by Canada’s Lennox Lewis - one of the sport’s all-time greats - he grabbed the silver medal thanks to the fact that many African nations boycotted the Games and only three fighters had entered in the super-heavyweight division.

But, it was against the rules of the Commonwealth Games that all three medals could not be awarded unless there were at least five entries in the event. But due to the boycott, most of the nations voted to award three medals to the boxers regardless of the number of entries in the tournament.
