Sub Junior Boxing Nationals | Karan Vats, Gopal Katta advance into quarters

Emerging boxing talent Karan Vats schooled Prabhakar Kalyan 5-0 in the 40kg category as he advanced into the quarter-final of the Sub Junior Boxing Nationals held in Rohtak, Haryana on Thursday at the National Boxing Academy. Uttar Pradesh’s Gopal Katta also advanced in the 37kg category.

As many as 33 teams and 326 boxers have been participating in the seven-day tournament, which would help in picking out the best of India’s rising pugilists, with the finale scheduled on July 8.

The youngster from Delhi, who has also been a silver medalist at the School Nationals last year, defeated Punjab’s Kalyan 5-0 living up to his promise. Delhi also saw Rudra defeating Haryana’s Vishesh 3-2 in a tight bout in the 35kg category.  

The 43kg category also saw Delhi’s Deepanshu seeing off a tricky challenge against Pankaj Singh Bhandari before he won 4-1. His mate from the same state Priyanshu Dedha had an easier run in the 46kg category against Jharkhand’s Rohit Kumar Yadav as he won 5-0 win over.

Apart from the local favourite, Divansh Shukla continued his streak and was declared a winner by RSC in the third round against Meghalaya’s Pratik Boral in 40kg. Akshat from Haryana, in the 43kg category, pulled off a 5-0 victory against Arunachal pugilist Ado Ito. Punjab’s Nikhil also had an easy 5-0 win over Bengal’s Aman Das in the 46kg category.

Goa also saw victors in the likes of Laxman Toralkar in the 35kg and Rupesh Bind in the 43kg category. Andhra Pradesh saw winners in Yerransetty Harivarhan in the 70+ kg and Ranjana Rohith in the 46kg category.

UP’s Gulfham also advanced into the quarters of the 35kg and joined Maharashtra’s Vedant Bengle and Gopal Katta in the 40kg and 37kg respectively. Katta, however, stole the limelight with a supremely confident display against Jharkhand’s Neeraj with a  5-0 win.

Assam’s Ohidur Rahman won 4-1 against Piyush Barman of Bengal in the 35kg category while Bengal’s Anshu Routh won against Himachal’s Rishav Thakur 4-1 in 40kg.
