Kavinder Singh Bisht has clinched a gold medal at the GeeBee Boxing Tournament by defeating compatriot Mohammed Hussamuddin. On the other hand, Shiva Thapa, Dinesh Dagar, and Govind Sahani lost their respective final bouts to bag silver medals at the 38th edition of the tournament in Finland.

It was an all-Indian final bout in the 56 kg category in which Bisht defeated Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Hussamuddin after coming back from an injury during the fight. He sustained a cut above his right eye but in the final round, he still managed to get the better of Hussamuddin at the end. This is the first international gold medal for Bisht in the bantamweight category as he was taking part in the flyweight category earlier in his career.

In the 60 kg category, Thapa went down to Arslan Khataev of the host nation by a split verdict of 1-4 against him. Thapa did well in the final round of the closely-fought bout but the Finland boxer clearly dominated the first two rounds. However, in the 49 kg weight category, Sahani made an excellent start against Thailand’s Thitisan Panmod but he ran out of steam after that and lost the summit clash by a 2-3 verdict and settled with a silver medal.

Dagar also lost his 69 kg final bout against Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Pat McCormack of England. Dagar played the final with a swollen eye as he sustained an injury during the semi-final encounter a day before. The Englishman was dominating from the very beginning of the clash and after a few seconds in the final round, the referee ended the contest with the verdict clear with McCormack.
