Indian boxers produced an incredible performance bagging 21 medals at the Asian Junior Championships in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. The men’s boxing team fetched two gold, three silver, and as many bronze medals whereas the women claimed four gold, six silver, and three bronze.
Indian boxers produced an incredible performance bagging 21 medals at the Asian Junior Championships in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. The tally included six gold, nine silver, and six bronze medals as the Indian team rounded off a stupendous performance on Thursday evening. India ended with the highest medal tally but finished second behind Uzbekistan (20), who had a better gold count of eight.
A total number of 239 boxers, including 170 men and 69 women took part in the event which was open to pugilists born between 2003 and 2004. The men’s boxing team fetched two gold, three silver, and as many bronze medals, whereas the women claimed four gold, six silver, and three bronze, capping off an impressive performance.
Vishvanath Suresh (46kg) and Bishwamitra Chongtham (48kg) were the gold medallists in the men’s category. Among women, reigning national champion Kalpana triumphed in the 46kg category with a 3-2 win over Thailand’s Yodwaree Thipsatcha while Preeti Dahiya captured the gold after a gritty 3-2 win over Uzbekistan’s Akhmedova Mokhira in the 60kg bracket.
Also triumphing in the women’s, in the 80kg category, Tanishbir Kaur Sandhu, who lost the final at the Nation’s Cup, made amends for it and emerged as the champion with a dominant 5-0 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chien Yu, and, in the 80+ kg category, Pathan, thanks to a strong 5-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Diana Magauyayeva.
In the men’s, the silver medals were claimed by Yogesh Kagra (63kg), Jaydeep Rawat (66kg) and Rahul (70kg). Among women, Tamanna (48kg), Tannu (52kg), Neha (54kg), Khushi (63kg), Sharvari Kalyankar (70kg) and Khushi (75kg) claimed a silver-medal finish.
Tamanna could not replicate her Nation’s cup heroics as she had to be content with just a silver this time after a 0-5 loss to Uzbekistan’s Sabina Bobokulova.
The bronze-medallists’ list for women comprised Rinku (50kg), Ambeshori Devi (57kg) and Mahi Lama (66kg). Vijay Singh (50kg), Victor Singh Shaikhom (52kg) and Vanshaj (60kg) came up with a bronze-medal finish in the men’s competition.
