Tania Sachdev leads India's win over USA at World Team Chess Championship

Tania Sachdev tore apart the defences of USA's Sabina Foisor to spearhead India's 2.5-1.5 victory over America in the second round of World's Team Chess Championship in Russia on Monday. India is now placed second on the table with Ukraine and Poland at three points each in the ten-team event.

The other boards in the round ended in a draw with D Harika drawing with Anna Zatonskih, Padmini Rout drawing against Katrina Nemcova and S Vijaylakshmi salvaged a draw against Akshita Gorti.

Russia continued heading the table with four points after handing the Vietnam team a 3-1 defeat. Russia is followed by Poland, India and Ukraine in the second position while Vietnam, Azerbaijan and Georgia follow them at fifth with two points each. China surprisingly languishes at the eighth spot with a single point followed by USA and Egypt who are yet to open their scoring in the tournament.

In the open section, the Indian men lost their second match to China by 1.5-2.5 when Vidit Gujrathi drew with Ding Liren on the top board while B Adhiban lost out to Yu Yangyi at the second which cost India the match. Parimarjan Negi also tied Li Chao on the fourth table and Krishnan Sasikaran did the same against Wei Yi after being in a strong position against the Chinese.

However, the Indian team is expected to claw back into the competition in their next game against Belarus. Poland and China lead the open section with four points each followed by Russia on three points in the second position. Ukraine, Turkey, USA and Norway stand jointly on the fourth spot with two points each while Belarus stands at the eighth spot with a point followed by India and Egypt who are yet to win a game in the tournament.
