Swayams Mishra becomes 62nd Grandmaster from India

Swayams Mishra has become India’s 62nd Grandmaster chess player after getting his third and final GM norm at the Polonia Wroclaw Master Cup in Poland. The 26-year-old chess player Mishra had claimed his first GM norm in 2014 during the KIIT Open which was held in his home town Bhubaneswar.
Indian chess player Swayams Mishra managed to win the Polonia Wroclaw Master Cup in Poland with seven points and became India’s 62nd Grandmaster. After claiming his maiden GM norm back in 2014, this was his third and final one which ensured him becoming another chess player from the country to reach the top level in international chess.
After his achievement, Swayams said that it took him more than three years to reach this position. He also expressed his delight of becoming a Grandmaster as well as winning the tournament in Poland.
"It has taken me more than three years to get to this point. I am happy to not only become a Grandmaster but also win this competition," Mishra told TOI.
Mishra also coaches other chess players in the country. He is a FIDE trainer and has been guiding young players like Sai Agni Jeevitesh, Shrishti Pandey, Sankalp Gupta, and Clarence Psaila. The Odisha lad also said his role is only “fine-tune” the youngsters’ game.
"It is all about helping others unlock their true potential. My role is to ensure I only fine-tune their game and not change their style of playing. Being associated with various players in the last few years has helped me understand the game better," the 26-year-old stated.
"If an opportunity arises, then I would love to be associated with them. There is just so much to learn in chess and I would be keen to know their style of preparation and understanding of the game."
Although he was in the middle of the tournament in Poland, the chess player also kept a close eye on the devastating cyclone “Fani” that hit the Odisha coast last Friday.
"I have been following the devastation that it is has caused and will love to contribute in whichever way possible," Mishra concluded.
