IPL release and retention list | Pune release Pietersen; Punjab release Johnson

The release and retention list of the players for the franchises are out for the next edition of the Indian Premier League and some big names have been released by the teams. Pune have released both Kevin Pietersen and Ishant Sharma, while Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson has been let go by Punjab.

Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad have released Kiwi pacer Trent Boult and Englishman Eoin Morgan, along with Indian leggie Karn Sharma. They have, however, retained the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, their star performer David Warner (who was the second highest scorer last season), Yuvraj Singh, and Ashish Nehra.

Last year’s finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore have released three foreigners - David Wiese, Kane Richardson, and Chris Jordan – along with Indian pacer Varun Aaron. However, the Bangalore-based franchise has retained the most number of players, along with Mumbai Indians, among all the franchises. The core of their batting lineup – Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers – will once again feature for them next season.

Former champions Kolkata Knight Riders have the smallest squad at the moment having released six foreign players – Morne Morkel, Brad Hogg, Jason Holder, Colin Munro, John Hastings, and Shaun Tait. KKR – and are likely to undergo drastic changes this season with Rs. 23.35 crore remaining in their purse – the highest among all the franchises.
