Pakistani club cricketer dies after being hit by a bouncer
Zubair Ahmed, a club-level cricketer from Pakistan, died after being hit on the head while batting in a club match at the Mardan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province on Monday. The Pakistan Cricket Board has stated that Ahmed was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal incident.
Just a little more than three years ago, a ball found its way around a tangled front-foot pull to a soft spot on the back of the neck to claim the life of Philip Hughes, leaving the entire cricket community in shock. That incident showed the importance of using safety gears in a cricket match and yesterday, the lack of the same claimed the life of a young cricketer in Pakistan.
In a horrible incident, Zubair Ahmed died after being hit by a bouncer during a domestic match at Mardan. Ahmed, who had played four List A matches and represented the T20 team Quetta Bears, was hit on the head on August 14, the nation’s independence day.
The southpaw dropped his bat and slumped to his knees after an attempted hook shot went awry at Marrara Oval in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, but quickly picked himself up and walked off the ground unassisted.
Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed the news on Wednesday in a message on their Twitter handle and also stressed the need to wear the safety gears all the time.
Tragic death of Zubair Ahmed is another reminder that safety gear i.e. helmet must be worn at all times. Our sympathies with Zubair's family pic.twitter.com/ZNmWDYaT5w

There had been calls for improvements in safety equipment in the aftermath of Hughes' death, but injuries still continue to occur. More recently, David Warner, copped a blow to the neck when he missed a pull shot in a practice game in Darwin on Tuesday. The opener slumped to the ground after being struck by the Josh Hazlewood delivery but got back to his feet quickly. He passed a concussion test and has been declared fit to fly out to Dhaka on Friday for Australia’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh starting later this month.
