Rohit Sharma’s captaincy debut turned out to be a huge debacle as Sri Lanka ended their losing streak of 12 consecutive ODIs, dating back to July 2017, after beating India by seven wickets. Although Sharma would want to forget the match as soon as possible, the game was a statistician’s delight.

1 – Despite having a disastrous run this year, Sri Lanka are the only team to get the better of India twice in the ODIs in 2017. They defeated India in the Champions Trophy group stage match as well.

2/2 - was India's score in first five overs. Since 2001, only once have fewer runs been scored in the first five overs by any team. England were 1 for 1 against Australia at The Oval in 2001.

3 - Only 3 Indian batsmen contributing higher percentage of runs in an innings than MS Dhoni's 58.03% (65/112) in a completed ODI. Only Kapil Dev (65.78%), Rohit Sharma (65.34%) and Sourav Ganguly (58.62%) have scored more in an innings where India were bowled out or batted their full quota of allocated overs.

4/13 - by Suranga Lakmal is the best figures for him in his 68 ODIs as he bettered his previous best figures of 4/30 against England in Pallekele in 2014. It is also the second-best figures for a Sri Lanka bowler against India in India after 5/57 by Graeme Labrooy in Baroda in 1987.

11/3 - India's score at the end of 10 overs is their lowest in ODIs since 2001. Their previous lowest 10-over score in this 16-year period was 16 for 2 against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2003.

12 - Number of consecutive defeats for Sri Lanka in ODIs before this victory. They had lost last two ODIs against Zimbabwe and then were whitewashed 5-0 by India and Pakistan each before coming into this series.

13 – Sri Lanka bowled 13 maiden overs in India's innings - the most in any ODI for India and it is also the highest for any side in ODIs in the last 10 years.

16 - The fewest ever runs at which India lost their fifth wicket. The previous fewest was 17 in the historic match against Zimbabwe at Turnbridge Wells during the 1983 World Cup.

18 - 18 was the number of balls taken by Dinesh Karthik for his duck which is the most by any Indian batsman in ODI history. The previous longest duck, in terms of balls, for India, was 17 balls by Eknath Solkar against England in 1974. Later in this innings, Jasprit Bumrah was out for a 15-ball duck, the joint fifth-longest for India.

112 – Lowest ever ODI total to contain an individual fifty where all ten batsmen were dismissed - MS Dhoni top scoring with 65. The previous lowest was 115 by Netherlands against West Indies in Delhi in World Cup 2011 with Tom Cooper top scoring with an unbeaten 55. Herschelle Gibbs carried his bat for 59 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 2000 where South Africa scored only 101 but Gary Kirsten was retired hurt in that innings.
