From entertaining the crowds with massive scores to the last-over pot-boilers, the IPL has never run out of steam when it comes to entertaining its fans. Time and again, the tournament has also gone on to embrace sport's greatest virtue - unpredictability with an amount of drama involved as well.

Here, in our countdown series, we are presenting you five instances when despite posting a big total on the board, the teams have failed to win the games.

5. Kings XI Punjab vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 2010

In a space of one and half hours, two players with contrasting styles painted the Eden Gardens arena with two sublime innings. But it was the precise and orthodox technique of Mahela Jayawardene that got the better of the big Jamaican Chris Gayle's bottom-handed power-hitting.

Winning the toss, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a great start through Chris Gayle, who staying true to his big-hitting style hit the Punjab bowlers all around the park. He got able the support from skipper Sourav Ganguly, who rotated the strike well to give Gayle maximum chance to hit the ball. With some late order surge from Angelo Mathews and David Hussey, Kolkata posted 200 runs, absolutely big on any count and it was surely going to be an onerous task for Punjab to chase that down.

Not many would have bet on the Punjab side, who had seen a string of deplorable performances in the season, to chase down the total. But two talisman of Emerald Isle came together to script a memorable victory. On that day, Jayawardene brought every stroke to the show and scored 110 runs while Sangakkara chipped in with 38 runs to help their side reach the target in just 18.2 overs.

While Royal Challengers Bangalore chased down the same score in the same year, we had to give it to the Kings because they did it in three lesser balls.

4. Kings XI Punjab vs Chennai Super Kings, 2014

The 2014 season has been remembered as the season of Glenn Maxwell and David Miller - the two men who took a moderate-looking outfit to the final of the IPL, only to stumble at the final hurdle. The said match is one of those occasions where the duo came together to reach a target of 205 runs, set up by Chennai Super Kings.

Chasing 205 runs, Punjab had lost three wickets for 52 in 5.1 overs, and had already seen three Indian batsmen, Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Axar Patel, make their way back to the pavilion. And then arrived Maxwell, who didn’t waste any time to counter Ashwin and set the tone for the chase. Miller, despite being patchy at the start of the innings, played an excellent second fiddle to Maxwell by ensuring that the pressure didn't mount on the team. After Maxwell was bowled for 95, Miller stepped up by hitting two consecutive sixes in the 17th over to take Punjab within the reach of the victory.

Partnering George Bailey, he took the team down the line under the scorching sun of Abu Dhabi.

3. Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2012

What a match it was turned out to be! In the Cauvery derby game at Chepauk, CSK and RCB gave the fans one of the most exciting finishes to an IPL match. Chasing 206 runs, CSK needed 43 runs off last 12 balls and but like many RCB-CSK encounters, it was an epic 28-run over by Albie Morkel from a Virat Kohli over that brought scoreboard to display 15 off 6 balls.

On the second ball of the final over, Morkel was caught on the boundary line, leaving Super Kings with 14 runs off four balls. But Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja ensured that it would be a game for CSK as Jadeja hit a four on the only ball he faced in the innings to win the game for the now-banned franchise.

2. Kings XI Punjab vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2014

A combined team effort helped Kings XI Punjab track down a humongous total of 211 runs posted by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 edition of the cash-rich tournament. In a game, Wriddhiman Saha, usually known for his orthodox approach, showed his explosive side scoring a quickfire 54 off 26 balls while Manan Vohra, playing his first match of the season, made 47 off 20. The duo's batting exploits took the game to 31 runs required off 24 balls.

From that point on, it was a piece of cake for Bailey and Miller as the Punjab squeaked home in the 19th over, and in fact, Bailey finished the game in an MSD-Que style, by hitting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six.

1. Rajasthan Royals vs Deccan Chargers, 2008

The very first edition of the Indian Premier League had seen many moments that fans will savour for a lifetime. Starting with Brendon McCullum’s epic innings to kick start a revolution to underdogs Rajasthan Royal completing a title triumph, the league provided fans with everlasting memories.

In just the eighth match of the tournament, Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers played out an epic match, in which Royals, led by the inimitable Shane Warne defeated Deccan Chargers in what turned out to be the highest-ever run chase in the IPL history so far.

Riding on a sensational century by Andrew Symonds, Chargers scored 214 runs, but as they say, ‘‘anything can happen in the IPL’’, Graeme Smith provided the Royals, a splendid start. He got the perfect ally in the form of Yusuf Pathan, who chipped in with 61 runs from 28 balls.

The game came down to the wire, and with 17 runs required off the last over, Warne showed a different facet of his skill as he hit his compatriot Symonds for a four before hitting two big sixes into the stands.

Such was the tactical brilliance of the legendary spinner was that the Wisden Bulletin went on to say that, “Test cricket had been unlucky not to witness Warne as captain.”
