Yuzvendra Chahal has acknowledged Virat Kohli’s immense confidence in him that eventually helped him to express himself freely and eventually come out on top. The Haryana wrist spinner also revealed how the coaching staff and MS Dhoni helped him execute attacking middle stump effectively.

Chahal will not be taking the field in Indian colours in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, but the leg-spinner has done enough in the limited-overs format for the critics to question his exclusion from the squad. The 27-year-old has been one of Virat Kohli’s go-to bowlers in the recently-concluded Australia and New Zealand series, where he took 14 wickets in the ODI and T20I series. And he has acknowledged that the skipper’s immense support helped him get the best out of himself.

“Virat bhai has always told me that even if I concede runs, if I get him a couple of wickets in the middle overs, he won’t mind. In T20s, he told me if I go for 35 runs in 4 overs but pick two or three wickets, he will be happy,” Chahal said in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Chahal has also drawn a lot of admiration for his variety of deliveries. While against batsmen like Glenn Maxwell and Kane Williamson, his main focus was on bowling outside the off-stump, against Martin Guptill, he preferred bowling on the middle-stump.

Chahal revealed that the coaching staff and mainly MS Dhoni behind the wicket helps in reading the wicket well and coming up with plans. “Our coaching staff has really helped (in attacking middle-stump). On the field, Mahi bhai (Dhoni) reads the situation very well, so he tells how to plan,” said Chahal

He further added, “The ball outside off-stump is a variation but my strength is to keep hitting the spot. At the same time if I am bowling slowly and the ball isn’t turning, the batsman is caught in two minds, (not sure) it will turn or not.”
