Ghulam Haider Abbas, a young Pakistan pacer, tried to immolate himself during a first-class match at Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) ground as he was fed up of rejections from the selectors. He also accused the selectors of demanding a bribe to give him a chance in the Lahore team.

The right-arm fast bowler entered the ground when a match in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was in progress and tried to pour petrol on himself. A few alert citizens, who were there to watch the game, saw the young player, rushed towards him and stopped him.

Abbas belongs to the east zone in the Lahore association. He stated that senior officials were behind his step of committing suicide, as he was fed with their false promises that he would get a chance to play in first-class cricket matches for the Lahore team, and their demands for money to aid his inclusion in the team.

“I have been performing well at the club and zonal level but they keep on ignoring me because I am from a poor background,” the pacer claimed as quoted by PTI.

“At the end, they finally told me that if I want to play for the Lahore team, I should pay them money. Today I came here totally fed up and wanted to end my life.”

Abbas warned that if Pakistan Cricket Board will not take action on his plea, then he would set himself on fire at the main entrance of the Gaddafi stadium.

“If I die, the east zone officials and the LCCA head should be held responsible for it because they are not selecting players on merit,” Abbas added.
