India’s emerging batting sensation Prithvi Shaw has impressed New Zealand’s pace bowler Trent Boult with a 66-run knock from 80 balls as Board President's XI comfortably beat New Zealand by 30 runs in the first practice-game. India start their 3-game ODI series against the Kiwis on October 22.

New Zealand speedster Trent Boult was amazed by India’s 17-year-old Prithvi Shaw during the Kiwis’ first One-day practice-game against the Board President's XI on Tuesday as New Zealand lost the game by 30 runs.

Batting first the IBPXI put up a score of 295-9 that saw openers Lokesh Rahul and Shaw building a first wicket stand of 147 runs as the teenager scored 66 off 80 balls. Heaping praise on the young batsman, Boult said, “I heard he was 17, I couldn't quite believe it. He played very nicely. I think the ball swung around nicely at the start, and it didn't seem to trouble him.”

Before finally being dismissed by Mitchell Santner in the 26 over, the right-handed Mumbai batsman hit nine boundaries and a six with relative ease leaving the Kiwi team very impressed by his skill and maturity.

“He's probably one of many who has a promising career ahead of him, if all things go well. But very impressed from the first look," said Boult.

Shaw was in the news a few weeks back as he became the youngest cricketer to score a century on his Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy debut. His 154-run knock helped him go past Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the feat. Shaw has previously shown signs of his mastery when he was in the news for scoring an astonishing 546 runs off 330 balls at a school match in Mumbai, which was recorded as the third highest score in any form of cricket.

Shaw was also good in India’s U-19 side’s recently-concluded tour of England where Shaw took part in the five Youth ODI matches. The right-handed batsman scored 21, 48, 26, 13 and 52 in the series. He has already been compared by many to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Vinod Kambli and even Tendulkar.

New Zealand start their three-match ODI series against India on October 22 and Boult, who took five wickets during the game looks to be in good rhythm. “It's satisfying to re-familiarize ourselves with the conditions here. It was very hot out there this afternoon, but it's disappointing to not come away with a win," he said.
