After BCCI made it mandatory for players to pass the yo-yo fitness test in order to be in contention for a place in the national side, IPL teams have also resorted to it to measure their players’ fitness. Bangalore, Punjab, Mumbai, and Rajasthan have all made it mandatory for their respective teams.

It was back in mid 2016, Anil Kumble was India’s head coach, that the yo-yo test first came to the fore. Suresh Raina was dropped from India’s home series against New Zealand after he flunked the fitness test and was soon joined by Yuvraj Singh on that list. Since then, the increasingly competitive Indian side led by Virat Kohli has seen the test growing to be an integral part of their team selection process.

The  Indian Express has reported that some IPL teams have also made the test mandatory for its players. Defending champions Mumbai Indians have, reportedly, just concluded their yo-yo tests in the city outskirts with others like RCB, KXIP and RR also making their players undergo this regime. As per recent fitness standards, remaining injury free is not enough for a player to get selected in the first eleven. Furthermore, the test results would also help the team management design the training regime accordingly.

“The teams now want their players to match up to the standards adopted by international teams around the world. India now has made the yo-yo test mandatory, so it’s natural to see some of the IPL teams follow suit. It’s good to see where each player stands in terms of their fitness levels how much work the support staff needs to put in behind the scenes with them,” said one member of an IPL team, reported Indian Express.

Players at the Mumbai camp were asked to complete each level within 14.5 seconds starting from 5, which meant players had to cover 200 m altogether between cones that would be kept 20 metres apart. It was also reported that RCB had asked their players to go through lung power test as soon as they were picked in the auction.

However, not every team has made it necessary for its players to go through it. Franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings are believed to be sticking to the conventional fitness tests.
