Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain, Dinesh Karthik, who wasn’t happy seeing the results of DRS, in their rain struck match against KXIP on Saturday, felt that DLS should be replaced by Indian counterpart Jaydevan (VJD). VJD has been used in many domestic tournaments and has given satisfactory results.

In a match that was delayed due to rain, Kolkata Knight Riders lost to Kings XI Punjab by 9 wickets. Batting first, KKR gave KXIP a stiff total of 192 to chase. In reply, KXIP were 96 for no loss in 8.2 overs and then, the match was hit by rain. At this point, the required rate for KXIP was well in excess of 8. But, when they came out to bat after the delay, they only required 29 off 28 balls, courtesy of Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. KXIP sealed the win with 11 balls to spare. Karthik felt that they could have made a match out of it, if it wasn’t for DLS method.

“Suddenly after rain, they needed run-a-ball. I didn’t understand that bit but I am sure Duckworth-Lewis is something people are still trying to figure out what it is,” said fuming Karthik, at the post-match news conference. “That was little surprising, because ideally if it would have been a 20-over game, they would have needed eight an over. If we could have got two quick wickets, the run rate would have kept going up.”

DLS has been recognized by ICC to be used at the time of stoppage of play. Hence DLS is used in the IPL as it is being played in accordance with playing conditions of ICC. However, the wicket keeper batsman felt that VJD could be a better method than DLS and should be used in the IPL.

“I have always thought that the VJD is an Indian method and it’s an Indian domestic tournament, why not think about it in the future?” he asked.

“It’s been proven that it’s a really good method. We have used in domestic tournaments. Only for IPL, we use DLS. Why not think about VJD here and promote it?”

Jaydevan did give presentations to ICC, but, was rejected by the governing body. KKR skipper pointed out that they were 10-12 runs short off target, but, could have bowled better to defend it.

“We could have scored 10-12 runs more. But more importantly, we did not bowl good enough to defend it.”

Gayle, who seems to score runs for fun, scored 62 not out from 38 balls. This was his third consecutive fifty plus and score and also, was the third consecutive victory for KXIP.

Giving his insights on Gayle, he said, “There is not a pattern to get him (Gayle) out that teams have found out yet. He’s batting really well and you got to accept that. It’s not only Chris Gayle’s day but KL (Rahul) also did well.”

Karthik seemed relaxed about their big man Andre Russell, who had to be taken off after he failed to complete his fourth over owing to hamstring issues.

“I’ve not spoken to him but he looks okay for now,” he said.
