India U-19 World Cup-winning skipper Prithvi Shaw and Andhra’s Ranji captain Hanuma Vihari have been selected in the Indian team for the remaining two Test matches of the ongoing series against England. Opener Murali Vijay and chinaman Kuldeep Yadav have been dropped for the rest of the series.

After winning the third Test match at Trent Bridge, a media release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the selection committee has made two changes in the squad for the rest two matches of the series. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to stay out of the squad, two youngsters Shaw and Vihari have been included in the Test squad for the very first time.

Vijay, who scored only 26 runs in four innings in the series, was dropped for the third Test after getting a pair at Lord’s. 34-year-old Vijay was India’s top scorer on the 2014 England tour where he scored 402 runs in five Tests. But, Vijay’s recent form was a cause of concern for the team management. Vijay struggled in South Africa and doesn’t have a good score to show in 2018 apart from a knock of 105 against Afghanistan in June.

Mumbai batsman Shaw’s selection shows that there might be a change of guard at the top of the order. Shaw averages 56.72 in first-class cricket and already has seven hundreds to his name. He went on to perform exceedingly well in the under 19 world cup and led India to a famous title win. Ever since, Shaw started playing Ranji matches for Mumbai, he has been one of their top performers. He got centuries to his name in his Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy debut matches and even broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record and became the youngest batsman to score a ton in his first Duleep Trophy game. The 18-year-old’s recent performance in first-class matches against West Indies A, England Lions, and South Africa A in the last one month earned him a place in the Indian squad.

Andhra skipper Hanuma Vihari has been a known face in the Indian domestic cricket for quite some time now and his success in the longest format for Andhra and India A gave him a chance in the Indian Test squad. The Kakinada-born cricketer has scored 5,142 runs in 63 first-class matches with a staggering average of 59.79. He scored 148 against South Africa A in the first innings of the Alur game a few days ago.

After troubling the English batsmen in ODIs and T20Is, Kuldeep was given a chance at Lord’s but with a green pitch and the Dukes ball, the youngster failed to effect any damage in his first Test match outside the sub-continent. The selection committee has decided to drop the Uttar Pradesh bowler from the squad for the next two games and he will fly back home and may join the India A team.

India will play its next two Test matches from August 30 and September 7 at The Rose Bowl and The Oval respectively.

Full squad: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Hanuma Vihari
