With Sanjay Bangar stating that KL Rahul is finding new ways to get out, the huge concern with him is pretty evident in the India camp. However, the extremity of it couldn’t be fathomed until skipper Virat Kohli was himself seen throwing down bouncers at him at the nets and he failed to face them.

Breaking into the Indian team in 2014 following his magnificent Ranji season where he had garnered over 1000 runs to make Karnataka the champions, Rahul had shown instant improvement at the highest level. After scoring just four runs in Melbourne on his international debut in Australia, Rahul had stunned everyone with a century in Sydney in that tour itself.

He has taken his tally to 31 Test matches since then, scoring 1848 runs that has seen five centuries and 11 fifties. He can now boast of centuries in countries like Sri Lanka, West Indies, and England, apart from India and although he has mellowed down of late in other formats, his talent is enough to keep his place in the Indian side.

After staying largely silent in the South African tour, Rahul ended the England series with a good 149-run knock at the Oval. He has got limited number of chances in ODIs since then but three T20Is that India have played, Rahul has been abysmal of late leading many to believe that his time is up to go back to the grind of Ranji Trophy.

However, with Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay not proving handy up top, in the longest format, the management decided to promote him as the opener. And now, ahead of the Australia series the management is banking heavily on him to perform. Their desperation was evident when skipper Virat Kohli was seen throwing bouncers to Rahul in his unusual run-up and Rahul escaped them by ducking.

Australia might not be the most dangerous Test side anymore but they surely boast of bowlers who could throw bouncers all day. And a cowed Rahul wouldn’t inspire optimism among Indian cricket fans.
