Former India Cricket team captain Gautam Gambhir has stated that, for him, Anil Kumble will be the ā€œbest leaderā€ he played under in the Indian team. Gambhir recently announced retirement from all forms of cricket and scored a century in his final Ranji match for his home team Delhi.

Gautam Gambhir managed a century in his farewell match for his home team Delhi in the ongoing Ranji Trophy scoring 112 runs. Earlier, he had announced his retirement from cricket and declared Delhiā€™s Ranji Trophy match against Andhra as his last one. Gambhir who has amassed more than 10000 runs for the Indian team across all the formats recently went on to express his views about his favourite captain.

ā€œThere is a difference between being a captain and a leader. I have played under lots and lots of captains in my career. The most selfless and honest person that I have played under, and I have learned a lot.

ā€œI have been asked which is the best captain I have played under and I have always said that the captain is as good as his team. Today I can say that I have played under a lot of captains, but there was only one leader and that was Anil Kumble. I think I have learned so much from him,ā€ Gambhir told India Today.

Gambhir, who has captained the Indian team in six ODI games and won all the six revealed that he perceived Anil Kumble to be the most selfless and passionate leader. Gambhir himself has proved to be a good leader and lead the Kolkata Knight Riders to two Indian Premier League titles.

ā€œI have played only five Tests under him. I have learned a lot of my leadership skills from him. The way he was selfless and the way he was passionate... the way he was honest about his own cricket. I think I can say after I have retired that he was the best leader that I played under,ā€ Gambhir added.

Gambhir also shied away from talking high about himself and said that all his career he was absolutely honest and selfless all throughout his career.

ā€œI donā€™t like talking too highly of myself, but one thing that I feel when I look back at my career, I can say that I have been honest to my profession and I have been very selfless as well. That is probably the most important thing about a leader and I think that I had both those things.

ā€œWhenever I captained KKR, I have been absolutely dead honest and been very selfless as well and that is what leaders are,ā€ Gambhir added.
