Akash Ambani has stated that Yuvraj Singh always featured in his plan and he did not bid for the left-hander purely as an afterthought. Yuvraj off late has been a pale shadow of his former self and thus questions were being raised whether he will be able to bag a contract at the IPL auction or not.

Yuvraj Singh will don the jersey of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the twelfth season of the Indian Premier League after he was picked up in the auction yesterday. Though no franchise bid for him in the first round of the auction, later he succeeded in garnering interest from the MI camp and was picked by them in the second round of the auctions.

“I did enter the IPL auction wanting Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) in my team, so it wouldn’t be correct to say we bought him purely as an afterthought,” Mumbai Indians’ owner Akash Ambani informed The Telegraph.

“We’ve always been wanting to have Yuvi on board, but we didn’t have the purse at the previous auctions.”

It has been more than a year since Yuvraj Singh last donned the Indian jersey and even his last IPL season for the Kings XI Punjab team was the worst ever scoring season for him as he managed a meager 68 runs from the seven matches at an average of 12.80. Hence doubts were being raised about his capability to bag a contract from any of the franchise at the auction yesterday.

“We haven’t saved Yuvi’s career in any way, for he’s been a fantastic player. Getting Yuvi is a plus and I’m looking forward to his contribution.”

Another veteran player in Lasith Malinga was picked by the MI franchise at the auctions yesterday. Malinga has been associated with MI since the inaugural IPL season but last season he was part of the management and did not play. But this time around that is set to change as he was picked for his base price of two crore rupees at the auctions.

“Malinga has been our best overseas player and he remains the No.1 wicket-taker in the IPL. We haven’t bought him on grounds of sentiment, but he’d be fulfilling a role.”
