India vs Australia | Selection blunders have cost India since South Africa tour, asserts Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar has opined that the selection blunders since the South Africa tour back in January have often led to disappointment for the Indian team, especially on foreign tours. He added that it is essential that Ravi Shastri & Co. find the right combination soon if they want to defeat Australia.

India fell to a 2-1 defeat in the three-match Test series in South Africa earlier this year and were comfortably beaten 4-1 against England earlier this year. While there were glimpses of promise on the two away series so far, India failed to assert their dominance in the same way that they do on home soil. And former Inda cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, reckons that the selection policy of the Indian team is the reason behind India’s lack of success away from home. Gavaskar wants the backroom staff to step up and take responsibility for the errors that were made in the past.

“We have been seeing this – the selection blunders that have been committed since the tour of South Africa. It has cost the team because it has lost matches which could’ve been won if the proper selection had been made.

“They have to look at the combination of their team, look at the hole that needs to be plugged and pick the men to. If they do that then they can certainly win the next two matches but if they don’t, and that too against this Australian team which does not have Steve Smith or David Warner, then the selectors need to think whether we are getting any benefit from this lot – the captain, coach and support staff,” Gavaskar said in an interview with Aaj Tak.

The former Indian opener, who is a part of the commentary team, is adamant that Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian management need to figure out the right combination as soon as possible if they want to register a series win against Australia in the ongoing tour. Gavaskar also spoke about the misfiring KL Rahul who has underperformed so far in the Test series against Tim Paine & Co.

“He (Rahul) has no chance of playing in the remaining two Tests unless of course there is an injury to any player. I think that he should be coming back and playing Ranji Trophy for Karnataka. It is not just that he is out of form, he is just not there and you can see that. He can prove me wrong and I will be very happy to be proven wrong as long as the Indian team benefits,” Gavaskar concluded.
