Rohit Sharma is likely to come back to India in the middle of the Test series Down Under as his wife is expecting their first child. The middle-order batsman had jarred his back while playing the first Test in Adelaide and had to miss out the second game in Perth because of the injury.

The Indian team is going through injury crisis in the ongoing Test series Down Under as Prithvi Shaw was ruled out from the entire series only after playing the warm-up match while injuries to Rohit and Ravichandran Ashwin kept them out of action during the second game in Perth. Meanwhile, Rohit is likely to fly back home before the Boxing Day Test as his wife is expecting their first child, as per a report published on The Indian Express.

Rohit Sharma was given a chance to bat at number six as he made a comeback into the Test team in Adelaide where the Mumbai batsman could manage to score only 37 and 1 in the two innings before getting out.

However, the team management has called up Karnataka top-order batsman Mayank Agarwal and Baroda all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the remaining two Test matches against the Aussies in Melbourne and Sydney. Agarwal has been called as a cover for the injured Prithvi Shaw, and will most likely make his debut in Melbourne considering the dismal series that KL Rahul and Murali Vijay have had so far.

The Karnataka batsman has been prolific on the domestic circuit for the past few seasons and though he received a Test call-up during the series at home against the Windies, he wasn’t given his first Test cap. He also registered scores of 65, 42, 42 for India A in the recently-concluded first-class series against New Zealand.

“I’m really happy with my selection. A good series is going on and to represent India is always a delight. Honestly, I was playing Ranji Trophy and my focus was completely on that, I take things as they come. When I was playing here for Karnataka, my main aim was to win for my state. When I will fly to Australia to represent India, my main goal will be to do well for the country,” Agarwal told The Indian Express.

“Discipline will be important once you travel to Australia. Go there and be fearless and be calculative. Four to five days is enough time to prepare, we have been playing a lot of cricket and are in the middle of the series. We have played a lot of games in the off-season and have been playing lot of India A games as well.”
