Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has stated that he is shocked by some of the revelations made by the Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft in the recent interviews. Smith and Bancroft were banned by Cricket Australia for their involvement in ball tampering during the 2018 Newlands Test.

Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were recently interviewed by Adam Gilchrist for Fox Sports and in the interviews broadcast on the eve of the Boxing Day match, both the players explained the events during and after the controversial Cape Town Test earlier this year.

"I’ve seen a couple of headlines (since the interviews), which I’ve been shocked at, I must admit. Some of the things that have been said have been quite shocking to me,” Ponting said to Cricket.com.au.

Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were the three players banned by the Cricket Australia for their involvement in ball tampering when Australia had toured South Africa earlier this year. While Smith and Warner were banned for one year each, Bancroft was handed a ban of nine months.

"We’re nine months on from this stuff and there’s still a lot being spoken about what happened in Cape Town. Now that those stories are out there, it’s going to be interesting to see what the reaction is tomorrow in newspapers and news channels. There’s enough in those stories to raise a few eyebrows."

But Ponting also stated that the players who are currently playing against the visitors India will not be affected by all the noise surrounding the Newlands Scandal as they have already moved on.

"I think the guys that are not banned have had long enough to move on from that sort of stuff," he said.

"The guys that were banned have had to live it on a daily basis, but the other guys not quite as much.”
