Rohit Sharma’s unfortunate day in Cape Town had got everyone praying for his century as it would have been the only silver lining. Hence, while his precarious upper-cut, at 97, saw Kohli rejoicing at the thought of a six, Shastri was horrified to see Shamsi standing below, who eventually dropped it.

Despite having a brilliant start to their first innings, where India looked to post a target of above 300 at one stage, the visitors saw themselves reduced to 176/3 in the 32nd over. At the core of it was their top run-scorer, Rohit, who was involved in two rapid run-outs of both Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. However, his positive innings was the only thing India could hold on to as they were eyeing to seal the ODI series.

The incident occurred in the 32nd over of the match when a nervy-looking Rohit Sharma had an unsettled Shreyas Iyer at the other end. The hard-hitter was clearly not in the best of spirits after the previous incidents and his unsure shot selections were reflecting it. Reaching a score of 97 with a soft edge through the third man from Kagiso Rabada’s delivery, Rohit wanted to finish things off as soon as possible.

Hence, when he hit the deck hard with a shorter delivery in the very next ball, the batsman couldn’t help himself but give it a touch over his head. The humungous strike looked destined for a six before everyone realized that Tabraiz Shamsi was waiting right below it to produce the biggest upset of the game.

India’s dressing room, however, had two different schools of thought. While Kohli was uber confident of the ball crossing the boundary and was already celebrating Rohit’s 17th ODI ton, a more experienced Shastri had noticed the fielder and put down his head in disappointment. But, Shamsi dropped the sitter to everyone’s surprise and the whole dressing room breathed a sigh of relief.

Though Rohit reached his century two overs later, he could only make 115 runs as India could post a target of 274 runs.
