India vs South Africa | Indian players rated and slated from their 28-run win in Johannesburg

After Shikhar Dhawan's 39-ball 72 helped India put up a massive 203, Bhuvneshwar Kumar's five-wicket haul ensured South Africa would eventually fall short of it by 28 runs. Reeza Hendricks's commendable effort couldn’t save the hosts' blushes as they continued their terrible run in coloured clothes.

Rohit Sharma (6/10) - The Indian vice-captain got his innings off to a dream start as he hit Dane Paterson for a couple of sixes in the first over of the match, but failed to carry on and became the maiden wicket of debutante Junior Dala. For a player of his calibre, who is struggling to score runs this tour, his start today came as a breath of fresh air, but as it turned out, the opener’s terrible form continued for yet another day.

Shikhar Dhawan (9/10) - After surviving a scare in which the South Africans didn’t appeal for despite Dhawan nicking the ball, the Delhi boy put up the “Gabbar” show for the Wanderers faithful. His innings was laced with 10 boundaries and two sixes and notwithstanding of the fact that Virat Kohli and Rohit’s failure, India ended up with a comfortable score of 203 runs.

Suresh Raina (7/10) - The southpaw last played for India more than a year ago - three T20Is against England in 2017. Coming back to the team, he had a do-or-die situation in front of them, but truth be told, his outing turned out to be a mediocre one. The 15 runs that he scored were mostly by chance, but he was a spectacular athlete on the field today. He grabbed three catches on the field which ensured that the hosts’ run chase never really took off.

Virat Kohli (6/10) - The Indian skipper suffered a rare off day today. After scoring a 20-ball 26, his former RCB teammate Tabraiz Shamsi caught him plumb in front. The Indian skipper also suffered an injury to his ankle during fielding and had to leave the field which summed up a not so memorable day for him.

Manish Pandey (5/10) - He surely could have accelerated earlier. Pandey, who came to the middle after Kohli's dismissal in the 10th over, instead of building on the momentum generated by the top four decided to grind down on the wicket and didn’t open his arms at all. While even MS Dhoni struggled to connect, he depended on the singles and doubles which meant India had to be satisfied with 203 runs on the board.

MS Dhoni (5/10) - Yet another forgettable day for the talismanic Indian wicket-keeper. While he failed to get going at the time of need, he was not at all impressive behind the stumps. He was feeling uncomfortable in collecting the pacer’s balls and apart from the run-out that he effected, he was not at his lethal best.

Hardik Pandya (6/10) - For a man, who burst onto the scene with T20 performances, it is just a shame that he has been terrible in the T20 cricket. Though he managed to score 13 runs off 7 balls in the last two overs, he was lackadaisical with the ball and spent away 45 runs in four overs. He has already been given a long rope and has been taking it for granted which may hurt him big time.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (9/10) - After terrible ODI series, Bhuvneshwar let the knuckle ball and slower one do the talking and picked up his maiden T20I fifer. Bhuvneshwar did what South Africa bowlers didn't at the start of the innings - used a smart change of pace and in his final spell, made sure that South African couldn’t score more than 175 in 20 overs.

Jaydev Unadkat (7/10) - The IPL big-buy had a point to prove and he didn’t disappoint. He gave away only 33 runs in four overs at an average of 8.25 and wouldn’t be too unhappy with his performance. He would try to rectify the errors that he committed today in the next match in Centurion

Jasprit Bumrah (7/10) - Not a great day for the Indian yorker specialist. While the onus was on him to capitalize after a 14-run second over from Unadkat that gave South Africa the sort of start they needed, but Bumrah failed to trouble them much.

Yuzvendra Chahal (6/10) - The wrist-spinner would be wishing not to come back to Johannesburg ever again. After getting thrashed in the Pink ODI, Chahal failed to sing the redemption song at the same venue and conceded runs at an economy of 9.75 in his four overs.
