The officers of International Cricket Council's Anti Corruption Unit have reached Colombo to open investigations on corruption after an Al Jazeera sting operation exposed alleged corrupt practices in the country’s cricket. The officials are likely to meet the persons linked to the alleged practice.

Al Jazeera's documentary on corruption in cricket revealed that three England and two Australian players had agreed to score at a rate specified by fixers for the purposes of betting on certain 10-over periods in two Test matches in India. It also showed that Galle pitch was also fixed to help the bookmakers bringing a very bad reputation for Sri Lanka.

To further investigate the allegations, a spokesman for the ICC confirmed Cricbuzz that ACU officials were in Colombo and are expected to meet individuals linked in the documentary. Two former international cricketers, a first-class cricketer, and the assistant Manager of Galle Stadium are the linked people on the matter, and one of the players, who was there in the documentary, is currently living in Melbourne and the officials are planning to interrogate him next week in Australia. As a matter of fact, SLC has already suspended three individuals who were employed as coaches and ground staff.

Incidentally, much before the Al Jazeera documentary came out, the ICC had initiated an inquiry into corruption in Sri Lankan cricket last year as the team suffered their first ever Test defeat to Bangladesh and an ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe.

While Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala had said in March that the ICC investigation was over and Sri Lanka were cleared of all the charges, Cricbuzz reported that ICC officials denied that investigations were over.
