Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting claimed that Glenn Maxwell doesn't have anything to prove to anyone and wants the explosive batsman to cement a place in the ODI team. Ponting added that things could have turned out differently in the first ODI had Maxwell stayed on for longer on the crease.

Delhi Daredevils picked up the Australian big-hitter from Kings XI Punjab for a whopping Rs. 9 crores during the mega-auctions earlier this year, and after announcing Ponting as their coach ahead of the 2018 season. However, the duo failed to engineer the winning formula that DD have been waiting for years in the cash-rich league. The proven duo also had a successful captain in Gautam Gambhir, but a low-key IPL season, where he scored just 169 runs from 12 matches, meant DD finished at the rock bottom.

Australia tried the same partnership in their tour of England, where Justin Langer kept Ponting as his aide in the backroom but the Kangaroos suffered a defeat in the first ODI. However, Maxwell still seemed to enjoy the confidence of Ponting, who has stated that he doesn't need to prove himself to anybody.

“He doesn’t have to prove it to anybody. He’s just got to work out the best way for him to play. He is at his best when the team is in trouble. When he goes out at 3-250, that is when he makes silly mistakes. When we were in some trouble (at The Oval), he played a good knock. Well done to Glenn, but I am sure he will be analyzing his own innings and thinking he could have done a bit better,” Ponting said to cricket.com.au.

Maxwell was the top-scorer with 62 runs in the visitors’ three-wicket loss to England at the Oval a few days ago. Ponting was impressed with his performance and opined that things could have turned out differently in the Oval ODI had Maxwell had stayed on for a few more overs.

“To be bowled out with three overs to go, if he was there at the end, he could have had a hundred and it’s 270 and a different game,” the former Australia skipper said.
