Sunil Gavaskar has referred to Rohit Sharma as the standout performer in both the ODI and T20I series against the Windies at home. The former opener also said that if Sharma does well in Tests then he can become the most destructive batsman after Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag.

The last game of the T20I series between India and Windies will be played at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai today and India have completely annihilated their opponents from the Caribbean islands on this tour by winning the Test, ODI and T20I series. Registering victories in the first couple of T20Is, India has already taken an unassailable lead before the first game and captain Sharma has been in top form. He went to score his fourth T20 international hundred in the second game of the series in Lucknow. Earlier in the ODI series, Sharma had two big hundreds and one fifty to his name. He remained unbeaten on 152 in the first game in Guwahati while at his home ground at the CCI, he amassed 162 runs. According to former Indian opener, Sharma is the standout performer from both the series for the Indian team.

“The standout performer in both the ODI series and the T20 series has been Rohit Sharma,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for TOI.

“Like Virender Sehwag before him, he is unstoppable once he gets going and like Viru he has an appetite for big hundreds. When Viru used to get out looking to hit another delivery out of the park, there used to be consternation around the ground, just like it is when Rohit gets out to a seemingly casual shot. If Rohit can turn his white-ball exploits into red-ball cricket, he will be the most destructive batsman in the world after Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag.”

Gavaskar also mentioned Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling against whom the Caribbean batsmen struggled big time and found it difficult to score runs. The Chinaman pocketed nine wickets from four ODIs that he played against the Windies while in the T20Is he took five in two games and was awarded Man of the Match for his three-for in Kolkata. The team management has decided to give the left-armer a much-needed rest and that will give an opportunity to leggie Yuzvendra Chahal to wreak havoc against the Windies.

“With Kuldeep rested, his good friend Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to get an opportunity to bamboozle the Windies batsmen,” wrote Gavaskar.
