Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he would prefer the pair of Murali Vijay and Prithvi Shaw to open the innings for the Indian team in the first Test match against Australia which will be played from December 6. Gavaskar added that the youngster resembles former Indian batsman - Virender Sehwag.

Virat Kohli & Co. managed to win the third and final T20I match against Australia to level the series 1-1 and prevent a loss in the opening phase of their Australia tour. Next up for Kohli’s men is the four-match Test series which is scheduled to begin from December 6 in Adelaide against Tim Paine and the rest of the Australian team who will be desperate for a win.

Former Indian opener, Sunil Gavaskar, has backed India to shine on foreign soil as they gear up for a gruelling month ahead of them. The Indian opener revealed that he would like to see the pair of Murali Vijay and Prithvi Shaw to open the innings for the visitors.

“He (Shaw) is got to play the first Test. He has had his form not just in New Zealand, but also in the two Test matches that he played in home. Rahul’s form has not been well. If Rahul had been scoring runs in Australia, even in the T20s if he would have scored at least 30s or 40s, we could have said yes. But I agree with Robin Uthappa (a pundit and co-commentator), I think it has got to be Murali Vijay and Prithvi. Vijay has been doing well overseas for a long time. It had been a pretty ordinary series in England, and that can happen to anybody. But he is a good player and I would like to see him open. He and Shaw will make just the right combination. For Shaw is attacking, like (Virender) Sehwag, he likes to get to the ball. Murali, on the other hand, will play the role of an anchor,” Gavaskar said after India won the third T20I in Sydney..

Indian veterans, Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane departed early but Shaw and Hanuma Vihari warmed up nicely for the Australia Test series with half-centuries for India A against New Zealand in the first unofficial ‘Test’. Earlier, Vijay scored 100 from 181 balls and shared a second-wicket stand of 204 with Essex teammate Tom Westley, as the former enjoyed a dream debut win against Nottinghamshire in his first county match.

India will look to cement their spot at the top of the Test rankings and will be on the hunt for their first away series win of the season after losing to South Africa and England earlier this year.
