While being overlooked by selectors for the India-Windies Test series might have got Rohit Sharma miffed, it did bid well for Mumbai, who will now have the world-class opener for the quarterfinal of Vijay Hazare Trophy. The team will be picked on November 10 for their knockout match against Bihar.

Mumbai have been undefeated in the 50-over tournament this season so far, as they topped the group A with six wins out of eight matches with the other two being no results. And ahead of the knockout stage, they would get a massive boost in the form of Rohit Sharma, who has just returned after leading India to the Asia Cup title, reported TOI.

After chief selector Ajit Agarkar affirmed it to TOI on Monday, another Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) coach went to state, “Rohit will play for us in one or two games. The team will be led by Shreyas Iyer, who captained Mumbai in their last two games in the league stage.”

With the semi-final and final scheduled on October 17 and 19, Rohit Sharma could be available at least till the semis if not the for the final, as India start their ODI series against Windies from October 21. Mumbai have already been missing the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shardul Thakur, who are currently with the Test squad.

“It’s good to have a high-class international player like Rohit. He’s an ODI specialist, and will make a huge difference to the team,” said another Mumbai coach.

Sharma, who is coming off a fantastic ODI tournament in Dubai where he scored 317 runs in five games with an average of 105.66, would also be having the much needed white ball practice ahead of the ODI series.
