Deodhar Trophy | Spinners shine as India B beats India A on Day 1
The Deodhar Trophy for the 2018-19 season began today with India B beating India A by 43 runs at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi. India B spinners Mayank Markande and Shahbaz Nadeem claimed four and three wickets respectively to restrict India A from chasing down the target of 262 runs.
Brief Scores: India B ā 261/8 in 50 overs (Hanuma Vihari 87*, Manoj Tiwary 52; Mayank Markande 4/48, Shahbaz Nadeem 3/32) beat India A - 218 in 46.4 overs (Dinesh Karthik 99, Ravichandran Ashwin 54; Ashwin 2/39) by 43 runs.
Winning the toss and batting first, India B lost the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad in the sixth over but Mayank Agarwal (46) and Shreyas Iyer (41) batted well in the middle and stitched together a partnership worth 59 runs for the second wicket. Both batsmen got out in quick succession in the 15th and 18th over to put the batting side in a spot of bother as they were suddenly reduced to 95/3 in 18 overs.Ā International cricketers Hanuma Vihari and Manoj Tiwary then combined together and added 99 runs for the fourth wicket to take their score close to 200. Tiwary got run out on 52 while Vihari carried on remaining unbeaten on 87 off 95 balls and his innings included 9 fours. There was not a lot of contributions from the lower-order batsmen and India B ended up with 261 runs in 50 overs.
India A was off to a terrible start in the run-chase by losing the wickets of Prithvi Shaw (7), Karun Nair (0) and Anmolpreet Singh (16) with only 36 runs on the board in 7.5 overs. Nadeem wrecked havoc in the top-order by getting both the Test cricketers Shaw and Nair in consecutive balls in the third over. Singh was picked up by pacer Deepak Chahar and soon he was followed by Ankeet Bawne (3) and Krunal Pandya (17) as both fell to Varun Aaron and the chasing side was reeling at 87/5 in 19.4 overs.
The Tamil Nadu pair of Dinesh Karthik and Ravichandran Ashwin tried their level best to recover the India A team from troubled waters with a 123-run stand for the sixth wicket. Both of them batted sensibly and at one point of time, the team looked in command in the run-chase. Markande broke the partnership as he got the better of Ashwin (54) and then skipper Karthik (99) was sent back by a stunning caught and bowled by Nadeem in the very next over. Markande ran through the lower-order after that as they could manage only four runs after Karthikās wicket and India A was bowled out for 218 in 46.4 overs.
