Ajinkya Rahane has been named the captain of Mumbai team for the initial four matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy which is scheduled to be played in Bengaluru. Prior to Rahane, Aditya Tare was the skipper of the Mumbai team, under whom it won the Ranji Trophy in the 2015-16 season.

Shreyas Iyer has been selected to be Rahane's deputy for the limited overs tournament with Vinayaka Samant as the team’s new coach. Mumbai will be meeting Baroda in their first match of the tournament on September 19 at Alur.

As Rahane went on to replace Aditya Tare as the captain of the team, former Indian player Ajit Agarkar has mentioned that Tare will still be an important part of the team.

“We've got the India vice-captain (Rahane) playing this time (in Vijay Hazare) for Mumbai, which hasn't happened in the last few years. We're quite happy that he's available. Shreyas is the India A captain. So, it's not about removing anyone. We'll take a call (on Mumbai captaincy for the Ranji Trophy) seeing who's available at that point in time," Agarkar told TOI.

“Tare is still an important, senior player for us. He's our first-choice wicketkeeper. He's been around for a while, and we need experience.”

Under Tare, Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy in 2015-16 and went to the final in the next season. Tare was made Mumbai captain in 2014-15 season of Ranji Trophy when the team had lost to Karnataka in the semifinals. After that, Tare has scored 237 runs in six games at an average of 23.70, which includes three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy. He managed to score 186 runs at an average of 26.57 in seven games, including two half-centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Rahane also doesn't seem to be in an explicit form as displayed in the series against England. He registered 257 runs in the five-match Test series against England at an average of 25.70, including two half-centuries. Shreyas Iyer, who will be acting as the vice-captain of the team, has been dropped from the Indian squad for the Asia Cup after a poor performance for India A. Prithvi Shaw will also represent Mumbai in this season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
