Virender Sehwag has backed Indian captain Virat Kohli to break most of Sachin Tendulkar's records before the former decides to hang up his boots from international cricket. The former India opener added that Kohli is a better batsman as compared to Australia's Steven Smith based on current form.

The emergence of Virat Kohli as one of the batsmen in the last decade has truly been a blessing to the Indian cricket team. With some great players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag all hanging up their boots in the last 10 years, there was a huge void left to be filled in the Indian batting line-up. Kohli grabbed the opportunity that came his way and smashed all records en route to being considered as the greatest batsman of the current generation.

Sehwag, who retired in 2013, has tipped the present Indian captain to break most of Tendulkar's records in the coming years.

"At the moment, Virat (Kohli) is the best batsman. The way he is scoring centuries, the way he is scoring runs, he is the best. I am sure he will break most of Sachin Tendulkar’s records.

"The one record no one can break is his (Sachin) 200 Test matches record. I don’t think anyone can break his record of playing 200 Test matches. I don’t think anybody can play more than 200 Test matches," Virender Sehwag told Timesofindia.com in an interview.

Despite Virat's dominance with the bat across all three formats of the game and incredible work-rate, some critics still rank Australia's Steve Smith as the better batsman amongst the two. However, the former India opener doesn't agree with that assessment as he adamantly stated that Kohli is definitely a notch above Smith.

"Virat Kohli is a much better player than Steve Smith. If you look at Kohli and Smith (while batting), Kohli looks much more pleasing to the eyes in comparison with Smith. He is the number one batsman in the world," Sehwag added.
